My Favourite Apps for Solo-Travel, Backpacking and Exploring

If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on your phone for the entire duration of your travels for just about everything. I mean, why bring endless books on top spots to see when a Google search brings up results in seconds. Right? Whether you save this post or take a screenshot of your favourite features, just know you’ll be making your time abroad a lot less stressful and much more enriching.

If you are looking for temporary housing, typically between 3-6 months, then check out BADI. I have used this app multiple times to search for housing in shared accommodation in Spain. One of the great things about this app is the ability to select housing preferences, your preferred language and your desired age-bracket. Just be careful that you don’t fall into a potential house-viewing which requires a deposit for simply checking out the property. This is not something which is the norm on Badi.

For people on a budget, or for people who are feeling particularly adventurous, COUCHSURFING could be a good shout. Essentially, hosts rent out a sofa or spare room free of charge to globetrotters, nomads, explorers, you name it. As with anything, check out reviews, credibility of your potential host and read up on policy so you know what to expect on arrival. You can also volunteer yourself as a city guide if you don’t have a space to host, or simply don’t want to do so. This way you can still socialise with travellers and offer words of wisdom on your city.

An oldie, but a goodie. Who doesn’t love the Lonely Planet Guides app? You’ll find guides for so many destinations, have access to a phrasebook to help get by and can use the currency converter feature. One major advantage is the fact you can also save guides, maps and other resources in ‘Offline’ mode, which is perfect for when you have used all your mobile data or don’t want to pay the premium of roaming charges.

If you prefer something a little more multi-purpose, TripAdvisor is your best bet. I am sure all of us know the site but how many of us actually have the app downloaded? I mean, that app really does have everything! From restaurant ratings to activity suggestions, you really shouldn’t underestimate the power of TripAdvisor.

Female travellers, I have you covered. TOURLINA is an app specifically for friendships when traveling and is exclusively for females. If you crave long-term friendships and want to gain a little more confidence with solo-travel then Tourlina would be a great option. You can also find travel companions for any future trip ideas you may have. It is worth noting that this app does have a paid subscription option, but you can also join for free.

Want to bond over your love of food? Give EATWITH a try. The way I would describe this app is by saying it is like AirBnB for foodies. For example, you can book with hosts to eat at their place, learn how to make a dish or just try something new. You can also host your own events, which may be an exciting concept for those of you who want to flex a little on your culinary/socialising skills!

Another fairly recent discovery of mine has been the app HOPPER, which I use for flights. This app lets you see when the cheapest time/month to book is and gives you alerts on your desired destination, so you can plan future travels. Hopper functions on travel predictions but once you get alerted on a trip you have your eye on, you can be certain that you’ll be making serious savings.

I hope you guys have been inspired to give one of these apps a try, let me know if I have missed one of your favourite travel apps off this list! I’m always open to suggestions.

See you in the next post!
